Dava Moor Fire
A very damaging moorland blaze
Dava Moor near Inverness caught fire during an unusually dry spell in June 2025. The fire became the largest ever recorded in Scotland affecting hundreds of acres of moorland and destroying thousands of trees. I was abroad when the fire began but visited on my return a week later. The ground was still hot, peat was smouldering and the destruction was sobering. The bones of hundreds of animals could be seen amongst the charred remnants of vegetation. The source is believed to have been a careless camper's campfire and once ignited the strong winds blew it out of control.
