COMMISSIONED WORK

Forestry & Land Scotland

The First Foresters Project, Scotland

The First Foresters Project was an initiative of FLS's Archaeology Dept. who wanted to produce a book aimed, amongst others, at upper Primary School & Lower Secondary School pupils as part of the Scottish Govt's Curriculum for Excellence. The book explores the use of the hand axe in the Neolithic period and its role in shaping the woodlands. The brief was to photograph a range of sites across Scotland showing mood & atmosphere, evoking (neolithic) fear of the dark woods, the cycle of death & renewal, new growth and if possible 'ritual inference' as evoked by tree alignment with sun & moon. The book is available here as a free PDF: First Foresters
